Stevenage is in the county of Hertfordshire but its proximity to the capital city make it part of the London commuter belt. Although it is known as England's first New Town, Stevenage existed as a market town for centuries, sitting comfortably in the midst of lush farmland. The new town follows an organised plan but the old town maintains the quaint haphazard layout of the medieval town. The town is near an old Roman road beside the 'Six Hills' that evidence the Roman presence. Lord of the first Manor house here was the Abbot of Westminster. The remains of a medieval moat can be found in the nearby Whomerley Wood. The free Grammar School was founded here and still exists although it is non longer a grammar school.
